A large part of the lecture will address the artistic discourses develop today within European performing arts and how the curators relate to these discourses when they programers the festival? The lecture examine forms of thinking in contemporary curating.

LAURA McDERMOTT is Joint Artistic Director (along with Harun Morrison) of Fierce Festival – an international festival of live art and public intervention. Fierce takes place annually across various sites in the city of Birmingham, UK. In 2012-13 she was awarded a Fellowship on the CLORE leadership programme in Arts Participation and Engagement supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. As part of the Fellowship she completed a secondment at Collide@CERN, an artist residency programme at CERN – the particle physics laboratory, located just outside Geneva. Previously Laura was a theatre producer and programmer at BAC (Battersea Arts Centre) in London.

HARUN MORRISON is a curator-producer and artist. Alongside Laura McDermott, he is currently co-director of Fierce Festival (www.wearefierce.org). Harun writes and talks in educational contexts on curating performance; regularly speaking at Central St. Martins and Royal College of Art. Since 2005 Harun has collaborated with Helen Walker, as part of the transdisciplinary practice They Are Here (www.theyarehere.net). Fierce Festival
Fierce Festival animates the city of Birmingham (UK) in surprising ways. We curate a programme of international contemporary performance, installation and public intervention. We seek to queer the space, time and situations found in the city’s regular rhythm.
As a festival of live art we are promiscuous in our partnerships and we work with galleries, theatres, concert halls and libraries. We also love working in offsite spaces – in the past our projects have taken place in car parks, swimming pools, strip clubs, former metal factories, under motorway interchanges and in a canalside urban allotment.

A discussion with Laura and Harun will follow the lecture.
